Ah, my pet - your comment finally appeared for vetting. The ways of my website are a great mystery to me. I know that drive up highway 27 very well. We drove it to Marianna to see Grannie and I can only pity your poor parents, making the Miami to Mobile run. They must have been saints of patience, or fond of group singing. When we lived in Mississippi and drove home to Marianna from the West, we used to sing our way across the panhandle. Just drive along, windows down, singing church songs. I still turn off the Ipod sometimes when I'm traveling (by car) and sing along for a while.

My parents are both from Mobile, AL. When I was a child, we would drive from Miami up Hwy 27, through Quincey (and the State Looney Bin) to Mobile. We would go there for Christmas or Mardi Gras. Mobile smelled like paper mill; to this day I find that smell one of love and family. It is a good thing in my mind. My Granny's would always cook Sunday "Dinner". It was served at noon. It was a full meal like a mini Thanksgiving. They now call this "soul food". Pot roast or roast chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, homemade biscuits or pull apart rolls. All the kids ate in the kitchen. The grown ups ate at the dining room table. Supper was usually cold chicken pulled from the bone on Dandee white bread with Miracle Whip.

My Granny made dishes that had ingredients like a sleeve of crushed Ritz crackers or crushed corn flakes. There was a liberal use of cream of something Campbell's soup. And "brown" gravy. It took marrying a son of a Yankee to finally see Giblet gravy. It took moving to Charleston for residency to see white gravy...I still don't know what that is.

I violated some of the rules of Cracker eating. Grits with butter and sugar. Rice with butter and NO GRAVY. Biscuits with butter and sugar or honey and not syrup.

Hey Janis,

Congratulations on the surprise Nuptials. I certainly understand under the circumstances why they made that fuss free jump.

And you are blessed with such beautiful, great daughters that a terrific son-in-law would just have to be part of the family package!

Many blessings to Abby and John! And safe keeping in all that he is doing.

Janis,
I finished "Michael" rather quickly and loved it... please let me know when you'll be at the high school. I would love to hear you speak.

OH!!! GOODNESS ME!!

Congratulations ya'll. Eloping is the key to a long marriage, :-) Rob and I eloped and we have our tenth anniversary on Oct. 1. The magistrate's office was next to the county jail and two officers waited outside the door with a hand-cuffed miscreant as we said our vows.

Here's to along and happy life together.

Hi Chris,
Oddly enough Canada has an audio version, but not the US. I'll pass on offer to my editor. If you have a good old DeFuniak voice then it would do nicely. And thank my friend at the paper. I'll be speaking at the high school in Ft. Walton in October - will be passing close by. xxjanis
